Klemens Hammerer is leading the research group on Theoretical Quantum Optics – Macroscopic Quantum Systems founded through the Cluster of Excellence – Centre for Quantum Engineering and Space-Time Research (QUEST, http://www.questhannover.de/) at the University of Hannover, Germany He is an expert on the theory of light-matter interfaces with atomic ensembles and light [1-12]. Together with Anders Sørensen and Eugene Polzik he authored a comprehensive review article on this topic, published in Reviews of Modern Physics [3].

Denis Vasilyev is a researcher at the post-doc position in the group of Prof. Hammerer. He worked on multimode light-matter quantum interfaces. In collaboration with Ivan Sokolov and Eugene Polzik he proposed several protocols for spatially multimode quantum memories, so called quantum holograms [13-16].

 Within MALICIA partner LUH will contribute to deepen the theoretical understanding and optimization of the light-matter interface based on the Faraday-interaction of light with atoms. We will work on the theoretical description of interfaces based on micro-fabricated cells, and incorporate the element of Rydberg blockade induced interactions provided in this setup. This new functionality of the light matter interface will be employed to devise photon gates and new quantum repeater architectures.
